De website van de Church of Satan is een grote bron van informatie over het satanisme, het ontstaan en de visie van deze stroming en de drijfveren van satanisten.
Anton Szandor LaVey, eigenlijke naam Howard Stanton Levy (1930-1997), was de satanist die de Church of Satan oprichtte. Op 30 april 1966 (Walpurgisnacht) stichtte hij de Church of Satan, de eerste publieke satanische organisatie ter wereld. Deze gebeurtenis markeert het begin van het moderne satanisme.
Satanisten zien zichzelf als navolgers van Satan, de enige godheid die, naar hun zeggen, begrijpt wat mensen doormaken: “Satan, by one name or another, haunted mankind, tempting him with sweet delights and enlightening him with blinding secrets intended only for gods. He was one who could be petitioned for powers of retribution and who gave deserved rewards. Instead of creating sins to insure guilty compliance, Satan encouraged indulgence. He was the single deity who could really understand us.”
Satanisten zijn voorstanders van de vooruitgang, dat is de kern van het occultisme: “We are explorers on the untrodden paths of science, human motivation and mystery – all that is most truly occult.” Volgens hen wordt ontwikkeling tegengehouden door spirituale mensen en theïsten.
Een satanist wil steeds meer op het grote voorbeeld, Satan, gaan lijken. De eigenschappen van Satan zijn deze: “the imagination to confound and confuse, the wisdom to recognize the unseen in our society, the pragmatism of a skeptic, and the passions of a classical Romantic soul.”
